The Law of Attraction for Beginners: What is the LOA?

I know what you’re thinking, the law of attraction is just a bunch of hippy-dippy, airy-fairy b*llsh*t. If it was possible to manifest your dream life out of thin air then everyone would be doing it, right? Don’t worry babes, a couple of years ago I was on the same page.

The first thing you need to realize as a beginner with the LOA (that’s the law of attraction in cool kid terms) is that EVERYONE is already using it, even you. Simply put, the LOA is the idea that whatever you focus on, you attract.

For example, if you’re always thinking about that job you hate, guess what? You’re gonna get stuck in it. If you’re always thinking about your boyfriend who’s driving you mad, you’re most likely gonna marry him. If you’re always thinking about the debt stacking up in your credit account, you’re not gonna be a millionaire any time soon.

You’re attracting whatever it is that’s taking up the majority of your mind, good or bad. So, I’ve written this beginner’s guide to tell you what exactly you need to do to start attracting more of the good and less of the bad. Look out universe, this gal’s about to do some serious manifesting.

How do You Know This Sh*t is Real?

I use the Law of Attraction A LOT but I’ve narrowed down my experience into 3 major manifestation moments. Please excuse me while I talk about myself for a couple of minutes so I can explain to you how I know this sh*t is real. If you don’t want to hear my story, feel free to skip this part (I won’t blame ya).

  1. Manifesting an A in an exam. My first encounter with the law of attraction was an accident. Let me paint the picture for ya: It’s January 2016 and 17yr old Fi is trying to get into one of the best Universities in the UK (YUP, I’M SPEAKING ABOUT MYSELF IN THE THIRD PERSON AND I LOVE IT). Anyway, she needs to get an A in English if she’s even got a chance of getting in. She fails the practice exam and her teacher predicts her a C (not a great start considering the university admissions are going to base their decision off of this). Great.

Anyway, she marches up to her teacher’s office and tells her she’s going to get an A or die trying. Then, with some strange stroke of luck, her teacher agrees to change her predicted grade from a C to an A (this never happens, btw).

Now, I’m a huge believer in the whole “work smart not hard” mentality, so after my predicted grade had been changed I knew my real grade wouldn’t matter. I had recently watched some documentaries about athletes and how they visualized themselves winning the Olympics hundreds of times… Then they did win the Olympics (that’s the LOA, btw).

So, every night I imagined myself getting an A in that dreaded exam.  Low and behold, results day came, and there it was; “Advanced Higher English – A”. I went from getting the worst grade in my class to (one of) the best purely by focusing on what I wanted. I imagined an A, and an A appeared.

  1. Manifesting a boyfriend. I know, it’s a bit (extremely) pathetic but I also know your ears probably pricked up at the thought of manifesting a special someone. Don’t bash it ‘till you try it, alright?

Just over a year ago, I was in a pretty toxic relationship. It was one of those where the good times were good but the bad times were REALLY bad.

Now, I’m not saying it was all his fault but it definitely wasn’t mine (just kidding). Anyway, one day I spoke to my mum about how unhappy I was and, in true mum form, she replied saying “you deserve someone who treats you like a princess” (thanks mum!).

I’d just finished reading The Secret and I wanted to try out this whole manifesting malarky. So, I used the Law of Attraction habits (don’t worry, I’ll tell ya these later) and visualized myself being treated like a princess.

Anyway, fast forward a couple of months and I’m living in a new city, with a new boyfriend and he literally says the words “I’m going to treat you like a princess”. Spooky, right? There’s much more to that story but I’ll save it for another time.

  1. Manifesting my dream job. I’m almost done talking about myself, promise (sorry, I can’t help it, I’m a Leo).

First, here’s a few things you should know about me: I hate being told what to do, I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and I’ve always wanted to be a writer.

So, after the boyfriend manifesting success, I thought I’d try to use the law of attraction in the career section of my life. At this point, I was doing a job I hated for a boss I hated even more (let’s not open that can of worms).

Anyway, I started using the Law of Attraction again. I pictured myself working at home in my Pyjamas, typing something on a laptop, and sipping on a coffee. Fast forward to now and guess what I’m doing? Yeah BABY, it happened.

5 Step Beginners Guide to the Law of Attraction

LOA for Beginners, Step 1: Change Your Attitude, Missus!

Negative Nancies, listen up! I’m gonna be honest. Not everyone can use the law of attraction successfully. If you think “life just happens”, you might run into some issues.

The first step for beginners is to believe in the law of attraction. You need to change the way you think and realize that you DO have control! Remember, the energy you put out is what you get back. Here’s how you do it:

Realize You are Not a Victim of Your Circumstances

My attitude towards life completely changed when I realized I wasn’t a victim of my circumstances. You need to realize that life’s a game and you are the one making the rules (yeah babes, that’s right).

Where you are now is the result of every thought you’ve ever had, every decision you’ve ever made, and every word you’ve ever spoken. You CAN turn your life around but only if you believe you are in control, make sense?

The sooner you realize that you are the one who got yourself into this situation, the sooner you’ll be able to get yourself out of it. Blaming someone else won’t get you anywhere.

I can’t tell if that was tough love or if I was just being an arsehole… You get what I’m saying though, right?

Stop Overthinking the Bad Stuff

Alright hen, this is the hardest part. You’ve got to stop worrying and start having some faith in yourself (ngl, I’m still working on this but a little progress is still progress). The sooner you realize that you can do this, the better. If all you’ve done since you discovered the law of attraction is worry that it might not work for you, then it probably won’t. So, how does the chronic worrier stop overthinking and start believing in herself?

It’s easy, you’ve just got to convince yourself of the “best-case scenario”. Did you know that if you tell yourself something over and over, you’ll start to believe it? Then, when you believe something you’ll start looking for signs that reinforce the belief. Here’s an example:

Have you ever thought a friend might be annoyed at you? Maybe she hadn’t texted you in a while and you started overthinking until you convinced yourself you’d done something horrible to upset them?

Then, when you ran into them, you looked for signs that they were mad? Maybe you thought they cut the conversation short or it seemed like they didn’t want to talk at all? Here’s an example of the bad kind of manifestation.

The reality of the situation was that they were just in a rush and didn’t have time for their usual blether. You talked yourself into believing the worst and (as far as you knew) the worst happened! You might even have ended up arguing with said friend over their non-existent bad mood.

Changing your mindset towards day-to-day situations will help you to become more positive in general. Then, when you’re only putting positive vibrations out into the universe, you’re gonna get positive things back. Start with easy, everyday things! If you run out of coffee in the morning, instead of thinking “fuck, I’m going to be shattered all day”, think “great, what kind of coffee am I going to try next?”

Here’s how the situation with your friend would go now, with your new attitude:

A negative thought pops up; Oh god, I think Jenifer must be annoyed at me, she hasn’t texted me in a few days. Instead of wondering what you might have done to upset her, you think of all the times you’ve been a great friend. You start to feel good about your friendship with Jenifer so you text her and ask to meet up for a coffee when she’s free. She replies saying “that would be great, I’m free on Friday”. Then, when you see her later on, she’s still in a rush and still cuts the conversation short but leaves saying “see you Friday!” You’re smiling, she’s smiling, the birds are singing and you’re having a bloody great time.

See the difference your new attitude makes? The situation is the same but because you focused on the positives you’ve ended up planning a coffee date instead of sitting at home, alone, thinking of the worst-case scenario.

Analyze Your “Forks in the Road”

For the law of attraction to work, you need to believe that it is real. I think it’s easier to believe in the LOA if you look back and analyze how you’ve used it before (even if you didn’t know it at the time).

TRIGGER WARNING: When I say, think of “big things” that have happened to you, I don’t mean traumatic events. You didn’t ask for any of that, it’s not your fault. If thinking about life-changing events might trigger you then please skip this little section. Lots of love!

Here’s how you can realize the law of attraction is real:

Write down at least 5 life-changing things that have happened to you. They can be either good or bad! You’ll know it’s a “fork in the road” moment if, had it not happened, your life wouldn’t be the same today.

For example, when I decided to leave university I was terrified and thought I’d made a massive mistake. Now, just over a year later, I have my dream job but I’d still be in university if I hadn’t had that fork in the road.

Also, when I look back I can remember being unhappy at university. I knew it wasn’t for me and I always thought about leaving; queue the universe! I’ve got faith in the law of attraction because I know the times I’ve used it without even trying.

If you’re a beginner with all this stuff, try using the “fork in the road” technique. I bet you’ll notice at least 5 big things you’ve manifested without noticing.

Lack Mindset vs Abundance Mindset

Now you believe in the law of attraction and realize that the way you think affects the way you behave, it’s important to learn what mindset you need to adopt. A lack mindset (negative mindset) is the result of focusing on a lack of something. For example:

“I want to lose weight”

Here, you are focusing on the negative. Your mind is giving attention to the thing you want to have less of – weight. Btw, your worth isn’t defined by your weight, this is just an easy example. Here’s an example of an abundance mindset:

“I want to gain a healthy body that makes me feel happy”

In The Secret, Rhonda Byrne explains this concept when she says “the universe doesn’t hear don’t”. I always tell myself that the universe doesn’t hear negatives at all (just to be extra safe, you know).

So, if you’re often thinking “I want to lose weight”, all the universe hears is “I want more weight”. You’re giving all your attention to the thing you want less of, so the universe will give you more. It sounds more confusing than it actually is, you’ve got this, don’t worry. Again, your weight does not define your worth, it’s just the easiest example to understand.

LOA for Beginners, Step 2: Learn to be Grateful

The law of attraction only works if you’re thankful for what you’ve already got because the universe will only give you something it thinks you want. If you’re complaining about your lack of money, all the universe will give in return is more debt.

As I said earlier, you attract more of whatever you focus on. So, if you’re grateful for what you’ve already got, you’ll get more! Sounds good, right?

Babes, it’s time to stop moaning and start growing.

Listen, You’re More Negative Than You Think You Are

Unfortunately, we’re all taught to be negative from a young age (especially us Brits). I’m not saying it’s you’re fault, but you’re most likely negative as f*ck. Acknowledging this is all part of the process.

As a beginner with the law of attraction, the easiest way to start being more grateful is to first realize how ungrateful you are; give yourself a kick up the arse.

First of all, you’re reading a blog so you’ve got access to the internet AND you’ve probably got some sort of laptop or swanky phone, right?

So, say thank you… Go on! Now, look around the room and pick out 10 more things you’re thankful for. There, you just became a little more positive, good on ya.

Make Gratitude a Habit

Learning to be grateful is one thing but saying thanks once isn’t going to cut it. For the law of attraction to work, you’ve got to make gratitude a habit. Every morning, I try to fill two pages in my journal with things I’m grateful for.

Gratitude raises your vibrations, baby; add a few thanks to your morning routine and you’ll be surrounded by diamonds in no time.

LOA for Beginners, Step 3: Use This System to Figure Out What You Really Want

How are you going to know the law of attraction is working if you don’t know what it is you want to attract? It’s time to get specific and figure out what your goals are. Imagine someone handed you a football and said I’ll give you £1,000,000 if you score a goal. You look around and there are no goalposts, just an empty field. How can you aim for the goals without knowing where they are?

Set Your Timer & Write Down Whatever Comes to Mind

Our wee brains get a bit overwhelmed when you give them too much time to think. The easiest way to find out what you want is to set a timer for 10 minutes (or 20 if you’ve got time) and write, write, write! Take note of anything that comes to mind. You can be as shallow as you like here. Go on, I’ll wait!

Label Them From Most Important to Least Important

You’ve probably got quite a few things on that list, right? It’s a good idea to figure out which things are most important to you. Write them all out again; put the most important things at the top, and the least important things at the bottom. Okay, now you know what you’d like to manifest. Good going!

LOA for Beginners, Step 4: The Best Step by Step Visualisation Technique

Remember all that frequency sh*t I was talking about? Well, now’s the time to get high (frequency-wise, I mean). To attract whatever it is you want to attract, you’ve got to be on the same frequency. I’m pretty sure whatever it is you want more of in your life is a positive thing, right? I mean, if it’s not, I’d advise you to see a therapist ASAP. Anyway, you’re going to need to vamp up that frequency, hun! I like to use this 3 step process (I’m a fan of steps, okay).

1. Meditate

Meditation is a huge part of the law of attraction. Our minds fire through thoughts at a million miles an hour! We need to quiet down those thoughts in order to give our full attention to the thing we want to manifest. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sit with your eyes closed for hours on end. A quick 3 minutes will do. Apps like Headspace and Calm are great for beginners.

2. Write it Down, Again

Now that your mind is quiet, it’s time to focus on what it is you want to manifest. In my opinion, it’s best to focus on one thing at a time. That way, all of our brainpower is being pointed in the same direction. You with me? So, write down whatever it is you want to manifest in as much detail as possible. You don’t have to write down the details, I just find this helpful for the next step.

3. Visualise it (in Detail)

Now that you know exactly what it is you want to manifest and your mind is focused, it’s time to sit back, relax and imagine your dreams coming true. For this example, I’m going to use money. In the previous step, you will have written down exactly how much money you want to manifest. Now, you have to imagine your bank balance with all this extra money. You imagine walking up to an ATM, putting your card in the slot, punching in your PIN, and pressing “display balance”. You see the number come up and imagine how it would feel. Visualize everything from what you’re wearing, what the weather is like, what particular ATM you walk to. It might even help to take a walk, look at the ATM, imagine using it, and seeing the number pop up. The more detail, the better!

Rinse and repeat. The more you visualize, the sooner you’ll manifest, babes.

Step 5: Use These Law of Attraction Hacks for Beginners

We all love a good hack, don’t we? As I said earlier, I’ve manifested a lot of stuff so far, from little things like a coffee table to much bigger things, aka relationships. Now, I’m not going to lie, I’m not perfect (it’s a shocker, I know). Sometimes I forget to write out my gratitudes or can’t be arsed meditating. We’re all human!

I’ve come up with 10 law of attraction hacks for beginners, to make sure you guys get off to the best start. Plus, you deserve a little reward if you’ve made it this far! These are hacks that I’ve used over the past few years to manifest some pretty big stuff. I’m not going to lie, I’m a lazy gal and if there’s anything I can do to cut corners, I’ll do it. So, if you’re like me, you’re gonna need these hacks in your life.

You can download them for FREE here, you’re welcome 😉
